Recent Activity

August 2007. CAN commits to carbon reduction at office.

In line with the rest of the country (and the globe, we hope) CAN has got carbon reduction fever.

CAN has always applied a sustainable approach to delivery of our services, prioritising use of public transport where journeys allow - or rather, where transport routes allow. We have a well implemented Environmental Policy, the latest version of which dates back to 2001, so we can hardly be accused of jumping on the "green bandwagon" (or bicycle for media stunts!).

Nathan Brown, who co-ordinates the co-operative's Social Account report said "At CAN we have always viewed the Co-operative Principle of Caring for the Community as extending to the global community, and we have always held environmental sustainability as key to the way we deliver our business."

"Measuring carbon emissions for us was difficult as we work from a building with shared fuel bills. We recently used a website to provide an estimate of how much carbon an average office of our size uses, and pledged to take actions to ensure our carbon usage is reduced to 60% less than average. In fact, many of those measures are already part of our working practice, which means our carbon usage started off at 41% less than the average office, which we are proud of."

Transport impact measurement is next step

Nathan explained that transport provides a challenge: "With a dynamic workload that can typically involve one of our workers journeying to the Fens in Norfolk one day, Inner City East London the next, rural Dorset on another day, and then up to Inner City Bristol, we recognise the environmental impact of how we travel. We have always used public transport where possible, which we feel has saved a huge amount of carbon that would otherwise have been emitted.A further reduction in carbon emissions may be a challenge without reducing delivery of our training and consultancy services where they are needed. However, we are starting to measure carbon impact now so the co-operative can choose what to do about it. One solution may be to measure the positive impact our sustainable approach to business has on our clients."
